If you are able to shoot RAW files you need a good editing software.

You don't have to go to Photoshop. There are programs like PICASA, BIBBLE , (CAPTURE ONE PRO for NIKON) RAWSHOOTER, and QIMAGE (QIMAGE handles raw files from older dSLR cameras. Raw (NEF, ORF, RAF) files are supported for the Nikon D1, D1X, D1H, D100, Fuji S2, and Olympus E-10 and E-20 cameras only. NEF's are supported for the D1X, D1H, and D100: all which support RAW edit). Photelements 5 has RAW support although less than some other programs.

There is a good choice without having to spend a lot of money on CS2.
But if you have the money CS2 does do a great job on RAW files and it is the top editor.

Try Konvertor, it will display your RAW photos as well:

Test the shareware version!

There are other software packages available for handling RAW files. Currently Adobe is offering a beta version of their ‘Lightroom’ and Apple Computer has earlier this year launched ‘Aperture’.

So what about Photoshop CS2? Though it handles RAW by using ‘Bridge’ (only available in CS2 and not CS1), it is not a dedicated program as Lightroom is intended to be and Aperture is.

Since I do not have either program, I can only say that I applaud the concept of a stand alone program for handling RAW files, as Photoshop address post work primarily. I know it is just another way to get ones money, but let us stop and think for a moment.

The digital age in the hands of the masses has only been around for less than a decade and as we continue to make technological improvements to how digital files are handles, it only stands to reason that we do need a separate program to handle files for RAW images and that over time such program’s become more refined, just like it took Photoshop years to develop their software to what it is able to accomplish today.

You can download a beta version of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom for Macintosh and Windows at:
http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/lightroom/

This offer will only be good till February 28, 2007.
